Little Moments... Big Magic

Big Brothers and Big Sisters are simply friends to children. They share everyday activities, exploring new horizons and experiencing the joy that simple moments of friendship can bring.

Through the nationally acclaimed program Big Brothers Big Sisters, EPIC offers two mentoring programs, both designed to give children enriching experiences and positive role models. Our community-based program matches screened adult volunteers to children in the 6-12 age group. Last year, we successfully created 85 matches through this program.

Our site-based program matches children with mentors in four local elementary schools. Last year, 160 children were matched with adults in this model. We also successfully piloted a program which recruits high school students as volunteers to mentor elementary school children from their feeder schools. Pedro Menendez High School students met with children at South Woods Elementary School once a week, St. Augustine High School students met with children at Crookshank Elementary School and Nease High School students met with children at Ocean Palms Elementary School. This year we will be adding another component to this program by providing high school students with mentors from St. Johns County government who will be providing insight into future career choices.

An important component of Big Brothers Big Sisters is professional case management and support. Our program staff supports matches through tough times and encourages, celebrates and validates matches as they evolve into friendships. Program staff also offers Bigs and Littles opportunities to be with other matches through special events and activities.
